Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Nate doesn't like veggie in diesel engines.

Tony,

It was not veggie oil that did in your expensive engine.  It was blend - mixing wvo with diesel.  People are theorizing that using a blend with dino Diesel causes a wax to build up in the fuel system.

Using 50% wvo, unheated, may have caused inadequate vaporization which lead to coking affecting the injector nozzle, the rings, and/or other components.

Sorry to hear about your expensive problems.  Hope the bus runs well now.

The towing bill was around $2,000 (had insurance phew) the new used motor was $3500, 2 months work to install by YT, and another $8,000 for mechanic work to install my jake brakes and bolt up the transmission generally much mucking about to get rolling again. We fluked on the new eng, it had just been rebuilt when they dropped a crane on the truck it was in.
I do not think it was the veggie oil that caused piston one to stop (boy you shoulda seen the mess, cylinder liner in pieces, con rod pretselled, etc) but much as I cannot afford the $500 fill up on Dino D, I cannot take a chance on a $12,000 eng rebuild.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Drifting 300TD

Actually, that looks a lot like the way Nate drives his '59 Nash Metropolitan, except without all the tail wagging.

And Nate does it on narrow (sometimes as wide as 2 lane) California mountain roads.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Drifting 300TD

They usually weld the differential solid for drifting.  You also can weld it for traction.

I welded my plow truck differential.  It pushes in a straight line well.  As you start turning a corner, the lack of a differential causes the tires to break free from the road.  The outside tire goes further, inside less distance.  The result is drifting on all corners without using the engine to break the tires free.

If you travel the roads, it's unsafe.  You don't have control in the corners.

Carl

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Drifting 300TD

My mom drives her 260e gasser that way...but seriously, great car and even better driving.

It is funny to think a few years ago when a list member suggested videos for repair, and viewing MB stuff, I thought it was absurd...now, I can't imagine the landscape otherwise.

Thanks for linking, it was great.

Nate, if that should happen again, just take the key out, that way the corners are no problem.

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Rear Spring insulator size question

I went with the 14mm. That way if incorrect I am only off by 1 step.
I have not taken it appart to see whats in there, I did some work computer work for a local shop and they said if I come up with the parts they will do the repair. Heres hoping the word is good.

On a side note, if you own a buisness, and have 30K in billing, dont let your frend that works as what ever, Butcher, Baker, or Candle stick maker, who claimes to be a computer expert work on your system, as it will just take me twice as long to fix the issues they caused before getting to the initial problem.

It was a sad case in this instance as the person backed up blank acrobat IRS forms instead of the quickbook db, then reimaged the PC back to the factory software, then did all kinds of hoekey stuff trying to re-install quickbooks.

Steve
No, I am not a computer expert, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.....

[diesel_mercedes] Sleepless in Seattle

Just got to say, Kent at MercedesSource must have corraled all of the MB's in the northwest. In 15 days, I have not seen any on the road, or in driveways. Makes me want to go home and fire mine up, even just to go to the store or the post office.

For safety ;

I'd replace both sides of the insulator .

For ride quality I'd use the 19MM but I like a firm ride as we have terrible roads here in Cali.
