Re: [diesel_mercedes] reuse of fasteners

I've rebuilt about a dozen M-B engines now, most of them were aluminum heads on iron blocks, all of them were pre-'85.  Never, ever bought new head bolts for any of them; never, ever had any head/head bolt/head gasket problems.  I'd have no problem reusing the head bolts on an iron head diesel.  These are not "torque to yield" bolts that many modern engines use.

When in doubt, throw them out. They may "work" but why take a chance. When we rebuilt engines in the 1950's and 1960's, I think we reused head bolts, but that was on american engines with much lower compression. For the $$, I would buy new ones. On the other hand, if I were out in the boonies as a backyard mechanic, just driving my "extra" car around the village, I would not hesitate to use the old ones after I checked them for stretch and had them magnafluxed.

This relates to a question I asked earlier this year. What is the policy of reusing head bolts in diesel Mercedes?
