Re: [diesel_mercedes] 1982 300D Trans Problem. B2?

Reverse doesn't want to move any more than front gears. Will the trans really drop that much bolted to motor?  I have plenty of tools and I done my own work for 35 years. Rarely do major engine or trans work. I added a bottle of Lucas that's suppose to help fluid and slipping but no affect. On another note, anyone know why you can't find pitman arms any where?

It IS possible to replace the B2 servo piston without completely removing the transmission, even on your W123.  You'll have to drop the rear of the transmission by removing the rear mount, and maybe the driveshaft.  It helps a LOT to have an overhead lift.

What's the problem with reverse?  This is probably another servo problem; could just be bad seals on the servo piston.  I would first replace the B2, then see how it all is.  If there's still a problem, it may be best to do a proper rebuild....

The easiest way to drop the trans?  Have someone else do it.  You can do the job yourself if you're up for it.  You'll need about 20-inches of socket extensions to remove the top two bolts.

For about a year bad flare 2nd - 3rd unless super careful with the pedal so I just manually shifted. Then a month or two before slipping it would get stuck in 2nd and would have to put in neutral or turn off and back on. Then over about a week the slipping got the the point it would not move but if I got it going seemed normal at highway speeds unless I came to a hill

As others have said, check the fluid level and quality: color, smell,
metal flakes, etc.
What are the symptoms? lost or high flare 1-2 gears? or 2-3, 3-4 shifts?
The quick check is off the dip stick, then drain the pan. You should be
able to see from there.

If smelly/burnt and/ or dark, yes change the filter and fluid.
If there's metal flakes, it might be beyond that already.

I plan on pulling the pan to see if anything obvious is there. Doesn't look like my model can replace B2 in the car. There's a frame rail running next to the B2 with only about an inch of space. Any chance it's filter? What's the easiest way to drop the trans?
