[diesel_mercedes] Re: Help picking out a diesel w123 or w124 for daily commuter

+1 on the W124; I have a '92 that delivers ~28mpg average and 36 on cruise controlled highway trips. I've had mine for 8 years and the first few years were spent fixing things. The great thing about Mercedes is that if you fix them right they stay fixed.  Assume that any used Mercedes of this vintage will either be expensive or in need of some maintenance. Assume that if *everything* works the seller wouldn't be selling it for as little as the Blue Book allows. A really good independent MB mechanic is your friend as sometimes "fixing it right" entails more tools, talent and time than I have at hand. Avoid the dealer at all costs. Check out the local chapter of the Mercedes Club; some have a healthy contingent of diesel guys. They're always more helpful and friendly than the snotty, condescending gasser guys. I also have an '86 190D non-turbo with a 5 speed stick. The manual seats aren't as comfortable but if an economical commute is your thing, ~ 35mpg average and 42+ on the highway makes up for it. The down side is that finding one with a manual is a rarity.
