    Don't look at the water pump.  Look at the temperature gauge on the dashboard (lower left corner of the binnacle). 
 
    If the water isn't being pumped, it won't circulate through the radiator, but will sit in the engine.  The water gauge will tell you very quickly that the water is overheating.

How do i check the water pump on an 84 300sdd? I started car took off top radiatorhose and the water just stayed there. I would expect it to go down as ir recycled to engine?
