My parents, both smokers, mom ciggarrets, dad a corn cob pipe, used to drag us all across the country. NO windows open. We did have a/c in our Turquois blue Olds F82. It was great. We stopped at Four Corners and stood in the middle of four states for pictures. Stopped at Stuckeys for fuel, potty breaks and junk buying. Saw everything from Phoenix, AZ to Honeycreek, Iowa then back to Lamar, MO. We camped all over AZ, dad put a board in the back going from the seat edge to the back of the front seat to make a bed for me, the baby of the family, everyone else got to sleep in the tent...I peed the bed..oops maybe that's why I had my own "bed"? We traveled all across the state of AZ, one sister got car sick on the winding roads near Prescott. What fun.
In 2003 Kevin & I drove from TX to AZ to get married (first for either of us!) at my dad's assisted care facility. My sister followed us! I took Kevin on the scenic route, I20 on the way there, I40 for the home trip, through Jerome the ghost town, on down to Cornville to see my dads property, up through Sedona to show him where I used to work, through Oak Creek Canyon to where we used to summer & fish, Slide Rock where we used to hang out and fish before it became a National Park, up through Flagstaff where I went to highschool the last time and where I learned to snow ski. Across Route 66 as much as possible of course. We stopped at all sorts of places along the way.
My sister has worn out two Hondas in her travels. One time her husband called her, "where are you?" "On the road" "WHICH road?" "Ugh, the highway." "What state are you in?" My other sister drove from Alaska to AZ and back again. I've been on the back of a Harley all across AZ and CO. My family loves the open road.
I'm looking forward to taking my "Rusty" on a road trip. Kevin is hoping to get off early next Friday so we can go down to Galveston to the beach for an over night camping trip. He'll need it to prepare for summer camp...the following Monday starts ten weeks of hell. One thousand kids show up every Monday and leave on Friday. He & his brother have to fix everything they break..."The door just fell off, we don't know what happened". It's so bad that the camp shuts down for a week off for everyone at the end of the ten weeks!
