When you go to work on your car (any vehicle) , often it is far cheaper to buy rebuilt or used ' exchange ' parts .
A big caution must be made here , any honest seller will allow you to pay a " core charge " for the value of the old worn out part so you'll keep it until the job is finished , then you return the old part and they refund your core charge .
Failure to do this has several down sides :
If the new/rebuilt/used part is defective , you return it and get your money back but , your core (old part) is _GONE_ ~ no matter what the seller tells you in advance , this is how it goes . you're now seriously stuck .
If you neglected to take some small bracket , special fastener or other fitment part off your old part before trading it in , it too is _GONE_ forever .
Parts sellers who will not relinquish the new part until you hand over your old one , are inherently DISHONEST as they don't care if you are able to complete the job or not .
In conclusion , never , _EVER_ hand over your old parts / cores until the job at hand is 100 % finished and tested over some days to ensure it's actually done and working to your acceptance .
