My grandfather worked many years in the Burbank oil field in northern Oklahoma and told stories about "drip pits". This was the lightest components that came from the wells (Natural Gas Liquids) and was run onto the ground and simply allowed to evaporate. When the automobile came along the oil field hands began using this "drip gas" in their vehicles, as it was free, until the oil companies caught on and they were threatened with job loss for further use!
