Naphtha is the correct spelling of the product and "naf-tha" is actually
the correct pronunciation. The first "h" is usually dropped and
pronunciation altered to "nap-tha", in our vernacular, but it is the
same product.
Crude oil is actually many different "fractions" of petroleum products
which are blended together to form the "crude oil". The fractions are
named respective to the number of carbon atoms that each contain and the
arrangement of these atoms with hydrogen atoms, hence "hydrocarbons".
Methane (C1), ethane (C2), propane (C3), butane (C4), pentane (C5), etc.
with "C" being the "carbon" component content of the material. This
continues for many more components. As the hydrocarbon components
increase in hydrogen and carbon content the "boiling point" (or range)
of the components increase. Butanes will remain liquid at around 30
degrees F while the "lighter" components will vaporize readily at
ambient temperature and pressures. Conversely, the "heavier" components
will remain as liquids at increasingly higher temperatures. (Road "tar"
is actually a "hydrocarbon" binder with fillers that "boil" at >700 or
800 degrees.)
Naphtha is generally "C6 and plus" materials that "boil" in the 100-400
degrees F range, such as gasoline. Many of the crude stills that you see
in a refinery are literally boiling gasoline to enable it to separate.
That's why it goes BOOM! if allowed to contact with sufficient amounts
of air! "Naphtha" is the stream that is collected from the various
refining processes that "boil" within this range. Naphtha (hydrotreated)
is basically "Ronson (Zippo) fuel" and is used as charge stock to make
gasoline base in reformers. You should be able to go to any hardware
store and purchase "naphtha" as a paint thinner relatively cheaply and
it will usually say "naphtha" on the can. At least it is cheaper than
buying a bunch of cans of "Zippo" fuel!
Hope this helps answer your question. As for naphtha as a gasoline
stabilizer or rejuvenator I can't answer that but Sta-Bil and some of
these product MSDS should help determine if there are additional
chemicals added to their formulas. Just search "MSDS Sta-Bil", or
similar and see what you get.
