I have put some LED cluster lights into my 84 300D and 82 240D, I think the socket is called T10 and I got them off ebay. There are different colors you can get. I have a set of 1-watt single LED lights that I have not put in. For some reason, the left side has gone bad twice or maybe three times now with the cluster lights. Right side works fine. I think maybe the LEDs are more sensitive to voltage than standard incandescent. Two items of note: 1) some of them come with wires wrapped around the socket base in such a way as it will blow out your speedometer wiring if installed that way so pay attention to how they are set up and make the wiring look like the incandescent bulb wiring, and 2) remember they are polarity sensitive so they will only work one way...which will be the way you don't put them in the first time (turn them around 180 degrees and they'll work)
Next time I do the job I'm going to just get some bright 12-volt LEDs small enough to insert into the speedometer light holes, rig them up to be on all the time when the key is turned on, and put them into the socket holes with duct tape or equivalent...forget the T10 sockets. No need to turn them on and off with lights etc as they use so little electricity and have such a long life (theoretically, assuming I can get a more reliable power source than what's wired into the speedo). Too much trouble to work the T10 sockets.
