The switch is most likely dirty. It can be cleaned out. I think it was
Tom who wrote instructions a few years back. Search the messages.

It's more surprising that the cruise works at all, as they're known for
going out. Mine worked like yours when I bought it, then later, not at
all. Some people have re-soldered the connections in the box, and others
have sent it out for repair. Not cheap.
