It seems like, the bigger issue is the smashed in rear.

The switch is most likely dirty. It can be cleaned out. I think it was
Tom who wrote instructions a few years back. Search the messages.

It's more surprising that the cruise works at all, as they're known for
going out. Mine worked like yours when I bought it, then later, not at
all. Some people have re-soldered the connections in the box, and others
have sent it out for repair. Not cheap.

Might just need some r134 if it's been changed over from r12.

Unfortunately in the Northeast we can't often get away with resting both feet firmlyon the floor.  It worked with my Fiat 600 not so well with my 560 SEL.
