    I had a '77 diesel Rabbit, 2-door.  NEVER broke 35 mpg.  Ever.

I loved that car.  Drove it from Boston to LA when the network hired me for a new job.  Towed a Jartran trailer about 3 times the size of the car.  Looked like a semi-trailer rig that had been washed in hot water.

Got more than 30 mpg on that trip, towing that full trailer.

    NEVER beat 35 mpg.

I just don't get it. In the early 80's I had a VW Rabbit diesel that could knock out 50mpg's on long trips. Even around town it would do better than 40mpg. So....we were able to generate that kind of economy 30 years ago, but there is almost nothing out there that can beat the fuel economy of a three decade old car design.
