Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: OM617 Air Cleaner Bracket

While I'm at it another story:  Two years ago I had installed a new exhaust system on my 300D which was wrecked 3 weeks later.  I pulled everything off I could.  Including the exhaust.  A few months later the exhaust on the 300SD finally gave up.  Over the years I've developed a distinct dislike tor the 126 exhaust system  It probably makes some sense on the V-8 but it seems irrational overkill on the diesel.  Not having done one recently I figured at least the header would fit since it was basically the same engine as the 300D.  Wrong!  The space between the turbo and where the header bends down is considerably longer on the SD.  Of course everything else is different.  Luckily I was having someone else do the work.  I now have a more sensible exhaust on the car for less than the SD parts would have cost.

I finally got to pull the air cleaner off of my 85 SD.  I had tack welded a 11" x 1 1/4" x approx 1/8" plate to the center section of the air cleaner mount and tapped holes for the rubber mounts.  Hopefully pictures attached.

I sure you've heard the definition of insanity. " doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result"

I keep several on hand as they seem to break sooner or later. I think maybe I should be proactive and beef up the stock somehow.
