It's good that you have spare parts. According to this tutorial, the cable may not be your entire problem.
My '79 (W116) is doing the exact same thing, and has for years. One FINALLY showed up at the Denver U-Pull-N-Pay this past Spring, and I was able snag the whole assembly (and a bunch of other long-needed items) for cheap. I haven't yet opened my mine up, so I don't know exactly what happens to cause this....
