What model of 1983 Mercedes?
I've seen it done on Wheeler Dealer(TV) on a BMW I believe. It is not for the faint of heart.

Subject: [diesel_mercedes] sun roof advice
My 83 sunroof cable has apparently failed. Sun roof closes but then
starts clicking before the rear part raises up. I suspect a new cable
is in order. Any advice would be welcome. Apparently new cables are
not available.
