Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: my summer vacation

Just got my calipers back on today. Doing something I've never done before is hard for me. I tend to do everything wrong before I get it right. But I got them back together and now I have to wait for someone to stop by to help bleed the system. If they leak I will go get re-builds and chalk it up to experience. If they work, then maybe I'll try it again. While under the car I noticed the rubbers for my front end are bad. Its still tight but obviously its gonna need a re-build. Anyone know what this costs? What exactly gets replaced? Who does this kind of work on cars like ours?
Nate, your arm looks narly. Hope it heals well. Looks like your gonna have scars. Max

A very busy Summer max ! .

The garden sounds nice, esp. the salsa.....

I tried my hand at caliper rebuilding back in the 1970's, didn't like it much and switched to used calipers from junkers/wrecks until I could afford rebuilt calipers .

Sorry about Moms and the dog, I hope the Alaskan trip went well at least .

Finally got back to my brake job on the front of my 240 4spd. Its in the garage.  A simple system that is extremely difficult and very frustrating to work on. Since I started this job life has gotten in the way of finishing this up. Its been so long I cant remember what happened first. After I tore the front brakes off the car I realized it was gonna be a trip getting it all back together. About this time I realized my number 2 car(the 240 auto) was making a screeching sound out of one of the rear wheels. I checked it out and , yep the brakes were shot. Then it was time for me and my son to make our trip to Denali for a week. So I had to get out my winter car(Subaru) to drive to the airport. We had a amazing time in Alaska. I tried to post pictures twice, but did not work. When we got back I started on the rear brakes on the no.2- 240, then I got a call my mom was dying, so the next day I flew to Sacramento.  My mom passed after a pretty good very long life. I know later that will mean something. Got back home and worked on the rear brakes on number 2. Of course I tried to stick pads on it but the pistons were froze up. Did I try and rebuild the calipers, hell no. Ordered rebuilds and had problems. First thing was they did not show up when they were supposed to, bummer because its a 50 mile drive  to town and back. Then I finally got them and one was defective (did not notice till I was putting it on the car) then the pads I ordered were too fat and did not work. O goody a extra trip to town. Meanwhile I have to be mowing the lawn and taking care of my garden. So far I have picked 170lbs of tomatoes and canned  15 gallons of sauce and made about 50 pints of salsa. Harvested about 30lbs of garlic, just planted next years crop yesterday. Also got my woodshed full. My dog died earlier this year, I am dogless for the first time in my life.

I had a very hard time cleaning cleaning the bore on one side so I broke it in half. Good choice, I hope. I could not find new o rings, but the old ones look good. Today I re-assembled one and there is no way I could do this with the caliper whole. The pistons are very difficult to get back in even when broke in half. It was so long I forgot what the heat shields looked like so I popped a caliper off my other car to remind me. So I got one caliper back together. If they dont work then I learned something. I will spend the money in the future and buy re-builds. Max
