Bill:
after following links, sometimes several layers deep, I found this . . .
Much thanks. Don't know how I didn't find it earlier.
Bogy.

The governor looks good - not that that means anything. But there are no broken parts that I can see and everything moves smoothly and was remarkably clean. It is a 722.303 which I have learned is a 300SD transmission. But this is in a 300TD so it is probably appropriate given that they are both a little heavier than our blessed 300Ds. I found some ATSG PDFs that have some good info. I was hoping to find a theory paper or some other description of the operation of this thing so I can think my way through the troubleshooting. There is a 1-2 valve in one of the bores on the upper valve body. Since it presents as not shifting out of first, then a 1-2 shift failure seems a good place to look. But I really need to understand how the governor pressure relates to all of this, and by the way, does anyone know where this fabled pressure test port is and what does it actually connect to? This is why I want a theory paper. Anyway, thats the news from my driveway. Any thoughts, data, pointers to data, etc. are welcome.

The kickdown switch and solenoid are both intact and properly functional. Since it is not upshifting I am pursuing the possibility that the governor, which adjusts a pressure according to vehicle speed, is not operating properly. If that pressure does not change then the transmission will not shift. It may not shift for other reasons too. But this is the next one I can think of. I got the slushbox out today and will put it on a bench tomorrow and pull the governor cover off and have a look see. I still believe that the core mechanics are intact and the problem is with the controls - the valves and springs and whatnot. Tomorrow I will investigate some of that whatnot beginning with the governator.

I don't think so because the B2 piston problem is a flaring when it wants to shift. My problem is that it isn't shifting out of first. There is a Mercedssource video where Kent had the same issue and it turned out to be a stuck electrical switch. I have determined that my electrical kickdown switch is working. But I am not sure the same can be said about the solenoid at the end of the wire.
I will certainly let you all know if/when I find/fix the problem.
