Re: [diesel_mercedes] Fuel Economy Check '82 240D Automatic

Thanks, there's the problem.  I really think the 300D axles will work, but I'd like aconfirmation.

I did a quick search for '85 300sd drive shafts.

Strange, Rock auto only has them for the 300D, for $72.89

The only SD ones I've found are much more and re-manufactured: $349.95

Hopefully, you can find some for cheaper.

I've used them on 300Ds but they don't have a 300SD listing.  They also show 2 lengths for the 300D 24 13/16 and 26 1/16.  I'll pull the axles if I have to, but I'd rather get the axles before I pull the car apart.  Cardone's help line isn't any help on this.  They only confirmed that they don't have a listing for 300SDs.  I'm just hoping that someone has had this experience and can confirm the correct axle.  Thanks

I've replaced all four(I think) on my 2- 240's. Used cheap rebuilt, lifetime, around $80,  I think now they are all Cordones, they seem just fine. These type of axles are actually pretty tough and take abuse. Its amazing how long they last with bad boots. My Subaru son just replaced  both fronts on a 2006 Outback  while I was in Reno, they look just like our backs, also Cordones. 06 Subaru's are easier to do this now than in the 80's and 90's and a bit easier than rear Mercedes. The Mercedes are pretty easy. Best to do in a garage for sure. Max

Back to rear axle problems on 85 300SD.  I'd like to replace the axles, but no rebuilders list SD part numbers.  I've used Cardone rebuilts on 300Ds and they are good.  They have 2 listings for 300Ds both 27 spline ends 1 - 24 13/16 OAL and the other 26 1/16 OAL.  Does anyone have any experience related to using these.  My general feeling is that one or the other will swap in correctly and I can pull the axles out to verify the dimensions but I'd appreciate any info that anyone has on this interchange.

497 miles , AC most assuredly used and me tramping hard on the loud pedal , silver Bottle Diesel Kleen used .

29 MPG , about one half of this tank was used on my recent vacation to Morro Bay , Ca. .

I'm off to Lake Tahoe as soon as my Brother wakes up .

We'll take his '87 300SDL , it has AC if no fan motor .
