From what you're describing, it sounds like coolant is coming out of where the a/c condensation drains out. That would indicate a possible leaking heater core, or, more likely, a short hose that connects the heater core(s) in the passenger compartment to the cooling system under the hood. You can get a better idea of what goes on in there from the factory service manual at the W116.org site:Mark in Centennial, CO1979 300SD

Subject: [diesel_mercedes] Coolant running out of 116
We have a problem with my wife's 1980 300sd leaking coolant. Yesterday, she called and said that the car was was overheating. After numerous stops to refill with water, we finally got her home. Found that the water was coming out of what appears to be an overflow tube on the passenger side of the firewall. This tube is 1-2 inches wide and outlet is made to remain closed but will allow fluid to come out if needed. Don't know how water could get from a closed system into this "overflow" tube. My Haynes book does not show anything and I could not find any pictures/diagrams on the internet. Any suggestion or advice on how this works or how to fix this problem would be appreciated. Thanks Tom.
