It's very likely the EVIL SERVO OF DOOM has failed , it controls the various vacuum pods that direct air flow .
Disconnect the electrical plug before it causes the servo to crack and dump the coolant while you're driving .
If you're a masochist , look in my older posts where I spent way too much time , effort , blood , sweat and many tears conquering the Klima I system your W116 uses , in the end , as soon as I had it working reliably I sold the car off at a dead loss and was glad to be rid of it .
The Mercedes Diesel Bug remained deep though so I still have THREE of these wonderful if occasionally frustrating Automobiles....
Just none with the five vertical HVAC buttons .
