Sigh ;
I ran the fuel down to low fuel lamp on (532 miles , YAY !) , saw the dreaded black crud in the clear plastic intake screen again and decided to pull the in tank fuel screen and see what's what .
The remaining two gallons of fuel drained out looking fine , the screen was almost spotless and putting a finger inside the tank's hole revealed nothing so I sighed (grumbled actually) , buttoned it back up and pulled the fuel gauge sender , as soon as it began to with draw I knew I had troubles as the tube's exterior was lightly coated in black filmy stuff.... 
I took the sender apart and guess what ? the lower inside of the tube and the float , contacts etc. were all coated in black chunks that *instantly* dissolved into fine paste when you touched them

So , I cleaned it all out and this time cleaned and polished the inside of the tube with a wire brush .
I then cleaned out the crap in the clear plastic intake screen .
When I take it down off the safety stands I'll try over dosing it with a half gallon of Startron when I tank it up again .
Remember the diesel fuel leaks I had ? the weeping diesel fuel attacked and destroyed the engine shock absorber mounts (kits from The Classic Center are not $pendy) , apparently the trailing diesel fuel that coated the underside of the car also attacked the rubber CV joint boots , they're all cracked now and one has parted spraying globs of $pecial CV joint grease all over the under side of the car......
Sigh .
I'd replaced the broken air rubber cleaner mount last week , flexed the remaining two as far as they'd go and no cracks , of course I noticed they'd both parted last night so I replaced them too , might as well since I was in there tightening up the new V Belts .
I see Pelican Parts has rebuilt drive axles for $101......
I also adjusted the vales , finding most of the ones in the front three cylinders tight .
I'd noticed the idle speed had dropped from 700 to 500 RPM's and the cold start had a loping idle .
More soon , I have other works to do to - day .
