Re: [diesel_mercedes] Cold Weather

Got down to 5 above this morning, and the '79 300SD started up.  I kept the battery inside overnight, and it took considerable cranking, of course, but it fired up.

Juiced the glowplugs twice.  It takes 35-seconds for the light to go out at this temperature.  Not the ideal get-a-way car, if you're planning something nefarious.

Valve adjustment is important, and a bit on the loosy side, too.  Also, I retimed the camshaft during my great auxiliary shaft time of tribulation.  It's now 5 degrees advanced over where it was, which did help starting, and, even better, performance and fuel mileage!

Its been much colder than that here. Close to zero, getting colder by Friday. Major reason I drive Subaru in winter, also snow and ice. My Kubota generator wont start now, and yes I am needing valve adjustment. Heading off to Sacramento to see my 98 yo mom who recently broke her hip. Max

It was 38* here last night .

I hope all here have done a routine valve adjustment , intake fuel screen replacement and added some White Bottle Diesel Kleen to their fuel to ensure easier starting this , the supposedly coldern'ell El Nino Winter .

The routine valve adjustment is probably the single most important thing you can do to facilitate cold weather starting .

Also , following the Mercedes cold weather starting drill as it really does work , I used it on my old '78 NA Diesel Coupe when it's engine was totally worn out as  it was my daily driver at the time and I leave for work well before sunup every day .

2016 will be the year of the monkey , I hope everyone has a good one .
