[diesel_mercedes] Turbo Overhaul In The Rain

I got back to my Coupe and it's old turbo to - day , I had done most of the cleaning Thursday and SWMBO told me she was lonely Friday so I took the day off and took her around .

I'm using the Mercedes Service DeLuxe overhaul kit as I had no idea how good my impreller shaft would be , no point in wa$ting time and $ , right ? .

It's a very comprehensive kit containing everything you'll need , even a few special tools he makes up that ease the P.I.A. parts significantly .

In all , this is a do - able DIY job as long as you're detail oriented and don't mind spending a lot of time on a few things , mostly removing impossible to reach bolts by turning them  one flat at a time .

I found the bearings inside to be worn and scored , one of the four circlips that hold said bearings in place , wasn't properly installed so maybe that's why it needed overhaul again (?) .

In any case , once you're re assembling it you'll know straightaway why overhauling it makes such an improvement ~

before overhaul the impeller spun by finger vut had resistance and stopped quickly the instant you took your fingers off ~ with the new bearings and dynamic seals , it spins effortlessly and slowly spools down to a halt when you let go after giving it a spin .

One of the main things is to NOT force it upon re assembly ~ I am not sure just how the dynamic seal ring fits into the center section but twirling the shaft as you gently push it into place seems to work ~ at first I was wondering how this was going to go but after 30 seconds it went ' klunk ' and fell right into place .

Ken gives you a bit of plastic pipe to use as a stand whilst you're working on it plus special (synthetic I think)  red grease and some red locktite , new turbo bolts , picks to help you remove and re install the circlips .

I don't like using picks so I went to SEARS and bought some nice snap ring pliers then mis placed them on the drive home (hopefully I didn't leave them in the Mongolian BBQ we stopped for lunch at) , Ken's picks are crappy Harbor Freight items , I found using my 40 year old Mac Tools pick worked much easier and faster .

Cleanliness is paramount on this job , there's a lot of dirt and carbon you'll need to gently clean away before re assembling , old red Locktite on bolt threads , bearing bores that will have crud and more carbon in them , I used two cans of Starting Fluid and copious clean rags , onc everything is Hospital Clean you lay out a different work area towel , light colored as there are lots and lots of small parts to loose , mis place or have go ! POING !  and vanish into the 63rd dimension .

I used the tailgate of my old Shop Truck as a work bench because it was parked directly in front of the Mercedes .

I know there were some more points I wanted to mention , hopefully I'll remember them to - morrow .

It was pissing down rain and thunder & lightning too , at times I could barely see my house across the back yard ~ a rare thing here in La La Land . my Dogs heard the thunder and decided I needed more and much closer supervision ,  , they remained between my legs as I sat on an up ended milk crate and worked .

This is DO ABLE ! .
