Saw this Pelican link re restoring your tired old paint job. I think I will give Martha a bath and see what I can do with her 350K paint job.
"Thanks everyone, the car is really turning heads now even more than usual. I was going to start by using the same technique as that long thread post at autogeeks about single stage paint restoration so I ended up starting that way with a decent wash and dry, followed by an overall clay bar'ing that I'm not sure really did a whole lot. At that point I was going to start with Meguiar's #6 wax/cleaner but I had this very shiney new bottle of the "ultimate compound" in the basement with it's fancy graphics and claims of gentle scratch free compounding for older faded finishes. I threw caution to the wind and went at it with a giant bulk rate package of white bathroom washclothes from costco and my own two hands. It was really easy. Very little pressure or rubbing to get great results. I barely wiped it on and off again and the paint really came out. That step made the biggest difference.
The next day I went at it with the random orbit buffer and the #6 wax, buffed it in twice, let it dry for 40 mins or so and then removed it with the remaining clean washcloths. I found that the machine didn't really help all THAT much and might just do it all by hand next time. Then again I'm the type that rakes my leaves and shovels my snow by hand even in those Boston blizzards this year.
It has a nice shine in the sun now but by far the biggest improvement was with that ultimate compound stuff. I was afraid but it went way better and quicker than expected, I wish my parents had tried this with their old Volvo 164 (sort of a mercedes clone) when they wrote it off because the paint was super chalky and really dull. My biggest thumbs up are to using TONS of cheap white washclothes from costco and the meguiars ultimate compound. I just happened to receive it as a gift for xmas so I figured I'd try it.
