How many miles do you estimate your son will drive the car vs. the miles
the shop says it is good for?
Get the AAA long distance tow package, if it is used once, it more than pays
for itself.
Tools? Drop by Harbor Freight and get the usual, screwdrivers, set up metric wrenches, sockets, etc. Or ask yourself, will your son use these ?
Find a local independent MB shop in his area, that he can take the care to,
if there are problems. And take it to prior to his driving it home.

Subject: [diesel_mercedes] Sylvia going South for the Winter
In an interesting twist of fate, Sylvia will be returning to her original stomping grounds in the US, Florida (the original owner was based somewhere in Florida, I still find sand in the crevices and corners of the car when cleaning somewhere I hadn't already).
My son is attending his first year of flight school @ Florida Tech in Melbourne, FL.
We're taking Sylvia from Boston to Virginia, then she boards the Amtrak Auto Train in Lorton, VA bound for Sanford, FL overnight.
From there we pick him up in Melbourne, then to my birthplace, Key West for a Thanksgiving feast at the very end of US Route 1.
We'll leave her in his hands until when/if he decides to drive her home at the end of freshman year.
Have had her in the local Mercedes diesel specialist for a complete once-over and the yearly valve adjustment. She seems to be running better now than ever....but.....if YOU were going to make the trip, what would you do to help re-assure your spouse and children they won't be standing outside the guard rail waiting for AAA?
For example, this will be my opportunity to give my son his first automotive toolbox. What would you put in the toolbox? We've already got the obligatory jumper cables, bottles of this fluid and that fluid, etc.
As always, your thoughts, comments & advice always appreciated...
-Barton
