[diesel_mercedes] Fuel Economy Check '82 240D Slushbox

204 miles , NO AC as it died .

22 MPG's , Tom and the guy who re - charged the AC with REAL R-12 both said it was clattering " like a snare drum " and I'd noticed the power was lees than a weed whacker so I took it on the freeway late at night and pinned the throttle , it took a long time to reach 60 MPH so I kept it pinned and waited to crest the next hill , going down hill it finally reached 70 MPH and  didn't seem to be laboring much so I headed home and let it cool over night then adjusted the valves ~ all 4 exhaust valves were tight as was one intake (# 3) , you alls may remember the # 1 intake valve is recessing so I can never get more than .002" clearance out of it .

I also replaced the clear Primary fuel filter again and noticed the air filter is very dirty after only 12,000 so a new one is soon to happen .

I also bought an oil filter and two gallons of Synthetic 10W-30 Motor Oil but the 114* F heat and chest pains made me decide not to do the hot oil & filter change just now .

I think it's quieter since the valve adjust , as I'm pretty deaf I want Tom and probably Victor to listen to it , if they says it's ready to blow I think I'll have the engine overhauled ~ no point it waiting for it to go ! BANG ! as that just makes the job harder and more expen$ive to boot .

We'll see .

I'm well aware this is a $1,500 car but I do love it so and hope to keep it for many years yet , if I have the engine done , I'll prolly do the tranny too as it leaks and this pi$$e$ off SWMBO even though I keep it topped up and clean the garage floor faithfully .
