[diesel_mercedes] Voltage & Temp saga 1979 300SD

Well, I purchased a voltmeter that plugs into the cigarette lighter because I wanted to know what was going on.

I think I've partially figured it out.  I've noticed when the temp gauge goes to about 110C my voltage was dropping and the car wasn't cooling off at speed unless I went downhill or flat and level.

In stop and go traffic at about 110C the car would cool to about 100C.  My aux fan would never come on.  So the engine driven fan is working.  It was hot out here last week so I'd figure the road temp was at 100F+.  Otherwise flat and level she's been running about 90C.

So I wired up a fuse and connected the aux fan to the battery and promptly blew the fuse.  I used a 10 amp fuse and I think the circuit uses a 15.  I decided to take the fan off this morning to inspect.  It seems stiff.  I've read where the bearings aren't sealed so I was thinking of tearing into it and see if I can clean them or replace them with sealed bearings.

The A/C is not working right now as my climate control system is a mess and I'm going to be working on that after I get the drivability problems (like the battery charging and temp issue) sorted out so that I don't have to worry about da wife using the car.

Anyone on list tear into an aux fan or am I wasting my time?

Thanks,
Bud
