Starter. All of mine did this, except the 59 190D. I replaced with a lifetime starter, works fine 99% of the time, but on rare occasions still does what you describe. It will eventually start.Up here in the cold north, it seems to do this more when it's cold. Max

On a hard start day after the third try starting I am getting a whirring noise from the starter and the starter does not crank. Could this be the starter, the flywheel or both or something else?
