RE: [diesel_mercedes] Glow plug issues

 

Hi all
Mine did this and replacing the glow plugs cured it. Does not make sense to me that the light would work intermittently but nevertheless replacing them worked. Car also started better and idled more smoothly.

So...I had been having this recurring problem of burning out the 70A fuse block on my relay every few weeks in my 1982 300CD turbo. I probably put in 8 different fuses in a 6 month period of time.

Then I got to looking at the two screw mounts for that fuse bar and found one of the two screws with a good but of tarnish and corrosion. I took out the screw and both washers and really polished them back to new again along with the copper bottom of the relay itself. Put it all back together and I have not had to replace the fuse link since. It has been maybe 6 months of the 70A bar fuse holding without replacement.

But...there are now occasions when my glow plug light on the dash will not come on. On those occasions I have to start the car without the aide of glow plugs and it takes a good bit of fast cranking before she fires up. (good thing I live in Houston in this summer heat)

So I am still thinking it is something in the relay that does not always get power over to the glow plugs or the ignition might not be feeding power to the relay block.

I would love to have some ideas from the board about what might be going on.
