by the time the boot is shot, the internals may need some help. The most expeditious way to handle this is to get remanufactured axles from your friendly internet source. There are two types of axles, the early ones which remove as you described and the later units which can be swapped out without poking into the differential. They bolt on to a flange right outside the differential face. There are, as I remember, an early and late version of the first style. The difference is in the distance the axle projects into the differential and the related position of the slot for the snap ring. Specify the year and if possible the vin to make sure you get the right one. For this type a set of seals should also be ordered.
