I found the problem with the '77 240D with no reverse.. It was in the inside the car part of the shifter. There was a special plastic washer under a special spring that holds the shifter rod in place. The shifter appeared to have been worked on before since the special spring was bent slightly but appeared to be of no concern. The shifter would not pull up unless I removed the special plastic washer. I did, it works now but not by the book.
