[diesel_mercedes] Spring Time Chores

With all this warm weather, my mind is turning toward Spring Time Chores such as (a) take the air cleaner off and tighten everything down, (b) put the new rear left door checks in both cars, (c) put a new map case on Mary's driver door, (d) new brakes on Martha, (e) inventory all the parts I have laying around and make a list of anything I want to snatch from local PAP's, (f) get my wife's radio and A/C operational again, (g) and maybe look underneath for clunks that need to be cured. Waxing both cars is a given.

What a joy to have automatics, used to drive a "two sticker" 5 gears in the main and 4 in the aux, kinda fun when you needed to shiftem both at the same time, I hate driving standards nowadays.

I would just leave it in Drive and let it shift down on its own when it needs it, unless you need to pass and it has issues down shifting when floored.

Weird question but it's been so long since I've driven an automatic tranny vehicle. Especially on long grades, do you drop it into S?

As an aside, I once had to get checked out in a frontend loader/backhoe, I looked at the guy and said "where's the clutch pedal?" The guy looked at me and asked if there were really clutches in heavy equipment?

And I don't think I'm that old! Or maybe I am.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Road trip w/ rebuilt turbo

Bud,

Yes, I rebuilt the turbo using the Mercedes source kit.

The temps were minor, 90*C going north, closer to 95*C going south.

The radiator is just a few years old, so only in the heat of summer does the temp climb.

Hi,

I just got back yesterday from my 1st real road trip w/ the rebuilt
turbo, about 800 miles from near LA to Yosemite. I still can't believe
just how much better it runs up the hills, and for passing. Going up the
Grapevine, right north of LA, it didn't bog down at all, like it had in
the past. It also ran right up Old Priest grade near Yosemite which is
pretty steep. In the past, it was only good at a particular RPM (power
band), and if it dropped below, it was hard to get back into the (power
band). Now there's plenty of power at a broader range of RPMs.

With mostly higher speed driving (80+) and some AC on the return the car
got 24mpg.
(the best with this car has been 25 mpg)

It runs so smooth after a road trip. :)

Has anyone changed the filter canister gasket to the block before?
I seem have a leak there and want to know how much of a PITA it is.
Thanks

[diesel_mercedes] Cheap manual glow plug relay replacement.

Just wire a momentary switch into the cabin and get a cheap 20 amp automotive relay.  Connect it to the input of the glow plugs and now you have a manual glow plug switch.  You can run it as long or as little as you like for those hot days or cold nights.  Only difference is you have to count to three on a hot day & 10 for a cold one.  Cost you 10 bucks.  Use 10 gauge for the glows and 16 gauge for the switch.  Not hard to do.  Need to know the theory behind triggering a relay.  One 12v low amp system triggers(switch) the high amp load(glow plugs). If you just used a dumb switch it would be pitted in no time.  The relay approach reduces pitting and it lasts a long time.   All glow plugs used to be manual.  In the "good old days".  Lawrence Rhodes........
