[diesel_mercedes] Huge oil leak, part deux

It's raining here in L.A.  so no strolls through junk yards, or driving cars up onto curbs to be able to get under them.

After polishing off some legal paperwork, I decided to go look at the 300SD.  My great hope was that I might look at the valve cover and see that the gasket had cracked after the valve adjustment, letting all that oil pump out.

So I did that in the garage.  No joy on the valve cover gasket.  The top of the engine is entirely oil-dry.

The good news is that the oil cooler hoses, which I had to replace a few years ago after a cut during a road trip, are solid and dry.  Both ends and the middles.

The engine isn't as clean as one of Nate's, so there are spots of oil here and there.  But nothing, looking from above, with the hood open all the way, that looks like a big leak.  The oil return line at the bottom of the air cleaner is set right.

And there is no clear indication of a leak, even at the rear of the engine.

I Guess there is really no alternative to lifting it up and looking up from underneath.  That's not going to be a pleasant job, with the garage floor coated in oil.
