The first MB diesel i owned, I was given and accepted reluctantly; I was afraid of large dealership repair costs and was unfamiliar with anything other than a NA engine without computer controls. The PO of my 300SD told me that the car wouldn't shut off and that he was told by the dealership not to fix it himself or he'd destroy the motor, or some other fate worse than death ....he believed them....he was afraid to try.

I fixed it by trial and error.

The lesson here is : go ahead and try a new thing , the worse you can do is screw it up beyond all reason and have to call in the Carpenters.

Or in my case, Dad or the shop. I enjoy working on cars, full size and radio-controlled (RC). I had a friend of my sister's helping me work on my first hobby grade RC car many years ago. He said he would work on it if it needed fixing. My blindness made this quite a challenge at first, both driving it and repairing it as well. After the 3rd accident, he didn't seem to have time to fix the car, and since I wanted to keep driving it, I either had to take it into the hobby shop or buy the parts and fix it myself. I took it in, had the shop determine the parts I needed and give me some basic instructions to do the repairs . I figured that I couldn't screw it up much more than it was already, so I got the tools and went for it! Within an hour, I had it back on the road again. That was 23+ years ago, and I've had over a hundred different RC cars, trucks, boats and a few helicopters and airplanes since then. Later that week when the friend came over, I happened to be out with the car. As I heard his car coming down the street and waited for it to pass, I gunned the throttle and raced up behind him as he pulled into our driveway. After he expressed his amazement with its speed, I exclaimed, "AND I FIXED IT MYSELF, INCLUDING THE MODIFIED MOTOR!!!!"
