FWIW, most carpentry mistakes can be reversed The first MB diesel i owned, I was given and accepted reluctantly; I was afraid of large dealership repair costs and was unfamiliar with anything other than a NA engine without computer controls. The PO of my 300SD told me that the car wouldn't shut off and that he was told by the dealership not to fix it himself or he'd destroy the motor, or some other fate worse than death ....he believed them....he was afraid to try.
