Assuming its a diesel generator, I would drian some from the bottom and check for water. If water is found drain it until it looks good, let it sit a couple days and repeat, maybe a third time if you still get water on the first repeat.

Then a biocide just to be sure you kill any growth that may be in there and some water in the diesel cure (Sea-foam?).

I used BioKleen in some very wet veggie oil that was producing some bad smelling gasses, could see lots of gas bubbles in the oil. 4 days latter, no more bubbles, although it still smelled bad.
