O.K. , many here polly have doors that don't like to unlock with the key but otherwise work fine , this is uaually caused by the exterior handle being incorrectly installed so the locking shaft , drops down and doesn't go into the special funnel shaped device that connects the key's twisting motion to the latch proper .
This piece is _plastic_ on the later models and so rots, cracks , breaks etc. , the DPM in SWMBO's '82 240D broke it when they stupidly did God knows what to the door , I had to work in there years ago when first we bought the car , last Saturday Tom located me an untouched '79 TD so I yanked the door latch out of it for the '82 .
This delicate piece is made of pot metal in the '79 and appears to work fine , to - day's the day I'll address it as she's out of town the entire week so I can tinker ot my heat's content and not rush the job , doors are a serious PIA most of the time , once in a while it goes easily , I hope this one does .
I also have to address the LR door's broken off lock button and maybe open up the RR door and replace the bad vacuum chamber as that's the _only_ vacuum lock on the whole car I've not yet replaced .
Well , that's it for now , the sun is up so off I go to work .
