I got the recipe off of Mother Earth News! 

I've seen other methods that use salt, smoke, brains (ewww, they have to be mixed in a food processor first) all sorts of ways to tan hides. 

I've had the same box of battery acid for years.  It only takes a bit, with a LOT of water and salt.

I'm not very good at tanning the hides.  I put them in the solution then forget about them...they have to be stirred 2x a day for 3 days before the next step.  I've managed to get one perfect pelt done, then Kevin gave it to someone that said it was "cool"!  I was astonished.  I worked so hard on it.  It is a PITA to do.

?? I remember tanning , I thought we used Tannic Acid .

Hydrochloric Acid (batter acid) is *REALLY* dangerous stuff ! .
