A TD? That's going pretty far back, for me. I've had several British vehicles, only one was an automobile; a '58 Hillman Minx. The Smiths speedo never worked, but the electrics never failed to perform as desired.

The rest of my British experience is by way of motorcycles. BSA's mostly. Never an electrical problem, once the rectifier was dust-bined in favor of a 20A full-wave silicon bridge. (The as-supplied Lucas unit would develop a short in one of the elements, draining the battery.) Even the starter on the '75 Triumph T160 worked reliably.
Not all of the Brit-bikes were Lucas. Some of the tidlers were Wiseco-equipped.
(I note that the power brake booster on my '95 Audi A6 proudly displays a big, green "Lucas" sticker....)
