Here in LA, we have people who bus carloads of people to locations, give them their signs, and pick them up at the end of the day. Don't know how they split the take, but I'm not sure they spend it on illicit consumption. It is just another minimum wage kind of a job, mostly men. One guy with 1/2 a foot used to do quite well. Some ladies with small kids are working our post office and local markets, they also do quite well. It oays to know where your local Salvation Army or friendly church is so you can give them directions. Most are not too interested. You can also volunteer to go to McDonalds and pick them up a meal. Again, not many are interested as they bring food from home in backpacks which are tucked out of view - or, I have seen their drop off drivers bringing lunch to them which they eat a block or two away from their pan handling site.

The gas can trick worked with me, I hate to admit it. the kid said he needed some gas to get to work and he even had the plastic jerry can in his hand. I give a bit to the guys who stand on the traffic islands with a sign. I figure that it they are that desperate, I'll risk being a fool - usually it is just a couple of dollars. It could be me in the future.
What really irritates me are the established charities that consume 50% of donations on administration and/or pay the CEOs millions of dollars. When they phone solicit, a always ask what the CEO makes.

Ben, That is exactly the guilt trip that the scammers are playing
into. Several researchers have checked into beggars and many of them
are using it as a well paid job. If I can find one, I will post an
URL. I have also personally guestioned what to do. Some of the
storys are really good. Surely some of them must be truthful people
in a desperate situation. But after seeing the research, I concluded
that many of them are scammers and all I would be doing is supporting
a drug or alcohol addiction. Bobby
