I think what Kent does is great and has its place. As a beginner, I find the "kit with instructions" approach very helpful and I suspect I'll grow beyond it. That said, I do find his booklets are a mixed bag. Some have been spot on for me and worth every penny, and others I have felt weren't worth the price (unclear instructions, muddy photos, too much selling and not enough walkthrough). If you do end up finding one, let me know if you think that one's worthwhile...
