[diesel_mercedes] Re : alternator bracket replacement

Difficulty Scale : 1 out of 5

PIA Scale : 7 out of 5

Filthy greasy Scale , 8 out of 5 on my fairly clean engines , about 2,465 out of 5 on Tom's car or most of the ones I see either driving 'round or in Pick-A-Part .

Parts cost , used , $50 Max. , this includes ALL the various 10 MM bolts & nuts , the special star headed adjuster bolt used on many years ....

If you can keep your temper , this is _definately_ a good DIY job .

Almost every old Mercedes I've purchased , needs this done as Mercedes
cleverly (or not) welded the easy to see & access 10 MM , 17MM ATF nuts to the brackets where most Mechanics will ruin them and the bracket before discovering you actually need to loosen THREE 17 MM ATF bolts from _behind_ the alternator...

Have fun ! .

The shop that replaced the alternator quoted 250 for the part and I will find out tomorrow how much for labor. Do they have to lift the engine to replace? Anyone done this before and can describe the job for me, and maybe a difficulty scale estimate from 1-5.
