Yes, swapping the engine is probably the best solution. Skip the kero/ leak test. Its your lower rod bearing(s). But I would go ahead and remove the pan and look at the bearings. Not a lot of labor and you would learn something.
I am concerned about disposing of the engine. I am forecasting that we are at hubberts peak for these IDI cars/engines. The are being crushed daily. I have 3 mercs that I paid less than 1000 for. The prices are rising. A good block can be rebuilt and run for years.
No. I'm not asking everyone to start a junk yard. If you offer the engine on ebay fully noting its condition, someone
will salvage it and fix it. These engines are swapped into land rovers, generators, water pumps...
I do appreciate you sharing your experience. It is always better to learn from another's mistakes. Thank you.
Everyone, take a break and check your oil level

If this is so , the engine is dead , don't wa$te a moment more on it .
Look around for a wrecked / rusted out 300D or 300DS and buy it cheaply & swap the engines out .
Be aware this is a big , _heavy_ job that'll cripple you if it gets the chance .
That's the cheapest way to go , bummer that orange Cowboy Boots guy was just another cheater .
It's very close to fish or cut bait time on this one , I wish you the best with it .
