Re: [diesel_mercedes] 1987 MB 300 SDL Ignition Lock Problem

You need a new tumbler for sure and you might end up needing a new lock along with it if you don't get the tumbler out of there before it locks up on you permanently. Please contact me at the office for more details.

Subject: [diesel_mercedes] 1987 MB 300 SDL Ignition Lock Problem

My ignition lock locked up twice last week. I still had about an inch of play in the steering wheel but no play with the key in the lock. The mechanic (not a MB shop) said my lock is old (probably the original from 1987) and replacing it should take care of the problem. I paid $340 and picked the car up on Friday.

Today (Saturday), I had the same problem occur in a low shopping mall garage. No tow truck fits under that low roof. It took about 20 (twenty) minutes of trying to get the lock to release and turn again. I started the car and drove home to feed my animals. When I wanted to start the car again the iginiton lock was stuck again.

I tend to think there was nothing wrong with the old lock and the problem was misdiagnosed. What do you think the real problem is ?
