Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Rear axle/differential work

Thanks for the explanation, Alan. I checked the replacement axles again this AM & found no difference between the two sides. I suppose the C-clip on the axle inside the differential is a replacement item available at local auto parts places. I haven't seen one listed at any of the online places. The axle replacement project is on hold for the moment as I discovered there was no brake shoe material on the parking brakes when I removed the rotors last night. I'm also removing the wheel hubs to replace the seals & repack (read "probably replace") the rear wheel bearings. I found an excellent write up with photos on this maintenance item on the Peachpart forum. Here's the link for any interested: http://www.peachparts.com/Wikka/W123RearWheelBearings
What's that saying about nothing being more expensive than a cheap Mercedes? Maybe I'll start some rust repair while I'm waiting on parts.

I think it was on the earlier cars where there was a right and left  axle.  As I remember there was a very light thread pattern on the inner hub diameter that was supposed to lead the oil that found its way into the surface of the hub back into the trans.

My replacment axles where the same part number for both sides and I could not make out any difference in the originals other then the torn boot on one side leaking on the driveway.

I believe also noted when I ordered the replacments that it said fits both passengers and drivers.

Sounds like you are on your way.
