Do you want to come up here to Oregon and help me sort mine out? It  shifts at nearly redline RPM in every gear. Also, is there a way to clean/empty the round oil separator on the intake manifold that's connected to the breather tube on the valve cover? It has lots of dirty sludge around the bottom of it.

Wow!  Never heard of such a thing.  Does the 340D have much more power than the 300D?  Is it a turbo or normally aspirated?

Is a "sluch box" an early iteration of those transmissions that allow you to choose between auto and manual shifting?

1982 340D sluch box .

AC & Biobor used, low fuel lamp on @ 423 miles, 455 miles total and 26 MPG .

The primary difference was : most of this tank of fuel was driven using the cruise control set between 60 ~ 65 MPH, highway miles, not much on town shifting that's been late sine having the transmission rebuilt .

I guess I need to get off my duff and adjust it so the up shafts come sooner .

EVEN SWMBO mentioned it shifts too late recently although I like the better performance ..

[diesel_mercedes] Fuel Gauge Service & Diesel Fuel Fungus

I have a fuel gauge sender I cleaned that didn't seem to work (gauge remained on 'E') that I thought the composite float had been saturated by the purple de greaser I used to clean it causing it to sink .

Late last night in a deserted filling station I decided to test it and take it apart to see what's what before I tossed it out, glad I did because it turns out that I'd inadvertently moved the delicate, hair thin sensing wires off the contacts in the float ~ to ensure proper reading the float has four contacts, two on each side 180 degrees apart and I'd put the wire out side of the contact path, it was easy enough to center the float in it's glide path and ever so gently lift the wire and re position it properly so each contact blade touches the wire 180 degrees opposite .

I decided I might as well install it having a nearly empty tank (455 miles, low fuel lamp on for 32 miles) and did so, it's in and now reads full, I hope the low fuel lamp contacts are O.K., they rarely give any trouble .

As long as I had diesel fuel soaked hands I might as well take the removed sender apart, I was surprised to see it has more dead fungus debris inside  it, I cleaned it up a fair good bit but didn't have any brushes to clean in the hard to reach crevices so I re assembled it and will get to that later .

It was cool at 50 degrees F and dropped to 45 before sunup, rain is predicted for Wednesday and Thanksgiving .

[diesel_mercedes] Furl Economy Check '84 300CD Slush box [1 Attachment]

AC and Biobor used, the clear plastic intake screen remains nice and crystal clear, I hope mentioning this won't jinx it...

364 miles, 23 MPG .

I just installed the rebuilt cruise control amplifier and actuator in my '82 240D and am very pleased with how well it's working ~ it engages smoother and holds the exact speed unlike the original one on my '84 300CD ~ that one engages abruptly and tends to creep up the speed desired over time .

I'll be sending it off ere long too .

I have attached the C.C. repair form in case anyone wants to save it, he also replaces the capacitors in various M-B relays and controls (like the ones that operate the HVAC fan motor), Becker radios and so on .

Worth saving this form IMO .

246 miles, 21 MPG .

Damn, that's too low but it's running sweetly and to - day I installed my rebuilt cruise control amp. and actuator, replaced the LED brake light bulbs with incandescent and it works, smoother and better than the original one in my '84 300CD so I guess I'll have to send those two in next.....
