[diesel_mercedes] Drive Axle Interchangability

THanx Bill ! .

One of the links says R107, W115, W115 & W123 axles all inter change .

The only fly in this ointment is : the photo they use shows the later style annular axle but says it's the earlier style homeokinetic.....

I'm going to order up new book kits and  service this fairly new looking german replacement axle I harvested .

[diesel_mercedes] Friday Fun (be nice, it pays !)

O.K. ;

Friday morning found Tom and I waiti9ng for the junkyard gate to open, I was able to get a buncha good stuff cheaply even if I did have to lay in the dusty / greasy dirt for several hours .

Another power steering pump, this one dry on the out side and clean red ATF on the inside, $30 even .

An annular typ rear drive half shaft, $21, includes the up graded drive flange, boots look crispy so I'll rebuild it before installing it, $21 .

A decent steering wheel, I don't find many that aren't worn smooth or worse, $17

Two brandy new front brake rotors with hubs, bearings and even the randy new TEXTAR pads, $29 ~ I just paid $30 EACH for the same ATE rotors in installed on my '82 240D, these will replace the 427,000 + mile ones on my 300CD .

A 65 ampere alternator from a 1985 Federal car, free along with a new, been sitting in the trunk of someone's car portable air pump/flashlight thing, it has a long cable with battery clips on it .

Plus of course, some usual special hard ware and proper #12 hose clamps etc. I find scattered here and there on the ground .

Saly, they've stopped separating the European cars out from the rest of the imports so the few Mercedes' I found, were widely scatted all over the place .

I need to find a catalog of drive axles to see what one fit what ~ I *think* R107 & W116 drive axles fit W123's but would like to know for sure .

TIA,

All's well that ends well. Stay in touch.

Ship the wheels in separate boxes, if it comes to eBay.

I'm not yet fully recovered from the bake job I just did on my '82 240D, the new front Ate rotors and pads really bring the car to a rapid halt with little foot pressure and high, rock hard brake pedal .

The rotors were the originals with 367,000 + miles on them, the minimum thickness is 10.09MM, I'd be amazed to find they were still 9MM........ (oops) .

It turns out the rotors are held to the hubs by big beefy bolts that my American made electric impact gun wasn't able to loosen so I hauled a cardboard box full of rotors and hubs down to AGA and as I was staggering in the door with them Carlos came roaring out of the shop yelling '! are you crazy ?! do you think you're still 20 years old ?! gimme those !' .

He made sure to add some new loctite on the bolts, he says he's seen quite a few over the years loosen up and fall out whilst driving .

I took a brief nap as he buzzed the old rotors off and the new ones on, I went home cleaned the bearings inner & outer repacked them and buttoned it all back up and then did some other little fiddles whilst the car was up on jack stands, adjusted the center engine mount and I think reduced the vibrations felt from 50 ~ 55 MPH to nil .

I also replace those always gone missing rubber bushings between the tranny's steel cooler pipes and their steel holders, not a moment too soon as one showed severe wear . (imagine the pipe leaking all the ATF out of my freshly rebuilt tranny as I'm far from home )

Part # to follow, I bought them from the M-B classic center, a 112 suffix .

I took the left rear door apart to fix the window lift, it was stiff and groaning, turns out the metal slider bracket's zinc plating had some whitish corrosion, I wire brushed it clean using a metal (brass) tooth brush and all was well, just to be sure I sprayed a tiny bit of industrial silicone on the white nylon slider block and capped off the leaky vacuum lock actuator before buttoning it back up, now my central locking holds for 20 + minutes and I think I know where the final leak is......

Of course the new vacuum actuator showed up the very next day, I hope to install it soon .

Yesterday I was out doing my physical therapy in my favorite junk yard and stumbled across a set of four 14"  light alloy disc wheels, these were only used for two years on U.S. 240D's so they're hard to find.

I bought the set, I'm pretty sure I have a single spare one @ home, making this a complete set of five I can sell for $250 .

If no one locally wants them I'll offer up on E-bay, they should get quite a bit there .

To - day's mission is a full set of up graded annular typ drive axles with flanges ~ all I needs do is take them off the junker and pay the guy $ .

Then I'll order up some boot kits from (where else ?) the Classic Center and overhaul them, install on this 240D then I'll only need one last set for my '84 graymarket 300TD and no more axles / boots until after I'm dead =8-) .

[diesel_mercedes] Tired

I put in a solid five hours yesterday on my '82 240D, I finished fiddling with the navy blue European driver's seat I installed then took the driver's rear door apart to repair the squeaky window lift and cap off the vacuum actuator, replaced the antenna shaft after some @$$hat bent it yet again .

Then I took the front brakes part way apart to replace the worn out rotors and realized I'd left important tools and parts in the garage that cannot be opened until I button it all back up again this morning and move both the car and my truck .

Sigh . two steps forward and one step back . being an Old Man is harder than I expected .

At least the replacement driver's seat is comfy and supportive .

[diesel_mercedes] Amazon Issues

Not always ;

I bought a book from a place that refused to use the Amazon Locker, it never arrived and now they're giving me the okey-doke, they even said I should have used the Amazon Locker ! .

I hope my credit card will reverse the charges .

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Merc on BringAtrailer.

No ! .

My wagon is a 1984 European spec. graymarket import .

Whenever SWMBO no longer wants it, my Son has asked for it .

Everywhere it goes, folks stop to look at and comment on it, always asking if we'd like to sell it .

I need to fix the AC ~ a hose blew the last time I charged it, maybe the expansion valve is stuck .

I'd like to replace all the hoses , flush the entire system and I'm pretty sure I have a brandy new OEM expansion valve squirreled away that's designed for R134a ~ the new Freon 134a runs at lower pressures .
