Re: [diesel_mercedes] AC Woes

Yep, every year. Been tru the whole thing over the years. New compressor was the last thing. Works good when it works, really goodMaybe one of my problems is the car sits from October tru April for winter. Sometimes I dont even start them because its a pain in the ass, very cold here. Max

That's the issue with my '82 240D and I have never really looked for the leak ~ most of the time it's the compressor shaft seal, I am told there's not a vastly improved seal that's not ceramic like the originals were .

[diesel_mercedes] Fungus & K100 Additive

Fred ;

Engines are engines unless they're two cycle so they sound pretty much the same .

Diesel engines almost never get ' misses ' because they can't foul spark plugs being compression ignition .

The tend to have a fairly narrow power band, why you need to use the gears just so to have any manner of performance .

I need to look under the hood and check the paper filter again, the last time I did it was still clean so maybe, just maybe I'm nearing the end of the fungus debacle .

My Coupe is running pretty well, it still lopes at idle when fully warmed up most of the time but not always,  I am quite sure the Injection Pump is kaput and am looking forward to replacing it but I can't until I have the damned recalcitrant VW out of my driveway .

Before the engine in m Coupe died in a large could of smoke, it ran pretty well on all five cylinders once it revved above 1,500 RPM .

Yeah, I have no idea how long it takes. I had just done the full flush (tank out) when we found K100. It was already running pretty good and never got bad again.

My problem is I have no idea what a good running diesel sounds like. It stays running. No heavy smoke and sounds like a really obnoxious baby toy.

Plenty of power, for what it is, once I learned how to use the gears.

Irritating because I have a good ear for gas engines, so I hear everything but it means little.

[diesel_mercedes] Progress [7 Attachments]

[Attachment(s) from Nate included below]

I got some progress done yesterday .

I jacked up the back of the '59 VW and looked at the remaining grease on the transmission and chassis Pics. 1,2  & 3, cleaned up some more (but not enough) and began removing what was left of the engine to body seal Pic. # 4, I had to use a box cutter to cut it then I was able to remove it in pieces using a super thin and long flat blade screwdriver to chip & pry out the little pieces of rubber then I used duck bill pliers and a vintage brake adjusting spoon tool to straighten out the sheet metal retainer Pic.  # 6 , I'd purchased new American made WCM seals Pic.5 and after a few hours of labor had the engine bay cleaner and ready for engine installation Pic. $ 6 .

By this time I looked like I'd been wallowing in a grease pit so I cleaned up just as Tom came by and helped me to push the car into the street and turn it around,back it into the driveway so it's more or less ready to install the engine, I need to take apart the throw out bearing and re grease it, I was going to replace it but upon cleaning it with a rag I discovered it's an original German made factory VW part, I taught my self how to disassemble and lubricate these in the 1970's, might as well save this one as I'm sure any new one I find locally will be cheapo Chinese .

Progress ! *:x lovestruck .

It was windy and COLD last night ~ the radio said 45* F ~ I wasn't getting up out of my warm bed to check .

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Fuel Economy Check '84 300TD Automatic

Max,

Everyone drives something else every once and awhile, just don't come back afterward telling us how much better it is than our old MBs, besides maybe the AC. :)

My 300D is on the stay close to home regimen (within 100 miles) until I sort out the tranny, and maybe now an axle, as I'm getting that clunk starting off.

[diesel_mercedes] Fungus, K100 & Filters [3 Attachments]

[Attachment(s) from Nate included below]

2.22.17

So ;

The K100 fungus treatment seems to be working well, the clear plastic intake filter has very little debris in it (Pic. #1) so the last time I flushed it out I added a micronic paper element filter for a 1972 Datsun (Pic. #2) and it quickly turned black from very fine fungus particles that were able to pass through the intake screen .

I filed up last night with ProPel Bio Diesel and changed the paper element, flushed a miniscule amount of crud out of the clear plastic intake screen , added some K100 and filled up .

I hope the end is in sight, hope springs eternal .
