Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Transmission Woes

I had the same issue with a plow truck that I bought.  It was just for the driveway and the horses.  It needed a new transmission.
I checked around and found well abused transmissions for $400-$800.  But didn't know what condition they were in.

I decided to rebuild it myself.  I purchased a book, and looked on the web.  I bought the rebuild kit from http://www.transtar1.com/catView.asp?ID=627 , Note the mercedes rebuild kits are in the import book.

It was a learning curve.  I have the time and patience to do it.  Worst case, I was out the rebuild kit.  The price wasn't that bad for the kit alone.

If you have a good book, it's pretty simple.  You pull it apart, throw out the worn parts, and drop new parts in.  Sort of like a big brake job.

Everythings a trade off.  What do you want to do with your time, what you can afford, what you need, and what you want.
I'm thinking 1800 is a reasonable price if you are hiring it out.  You'll probably get a higher price from AAMCO or any other garage.

[diesel_mercedes] RE: RE: Re: Diesel Giant

So we arrive in Tacoma on our way south, all the parts we ordered to take into Mexico so that we can do some maintenance are here, except for the Diesel Giant stuff.

Oh well we have waited for years to get the lever assembly for the shifter on the top of valve cover.

Installed the new Cruise control module today, have our fingers crossed that it will work. It is just so much fun to wriggle under the steering wheel.

Tony.

My concern was mainly that I would get to Tacoma before the stuff. We have quite a few parts waiting there already, I have time in Mazatlan to work on the car between margaritas.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] RE: Cold Starting

Sounds right on to me. Kerosene is basically #1 or stove oil or jet fuel or very close to it. Max

On Tue, Oct 29, 2013 at 9:55 AM, Mark Atkins <mratkins@embarqmail.com> wrote:

Hi,

Maybe I can explain some of this.

Diesel fuel is, of course, a component of crude oil. In a fractionating column (towers you see in a refinery) the composition of the products produced are controlled by heat input into the tower feed stocks and heat removal in the process. Each component that is separated is a specific "boiling range" of material. The "lighter" components exit the top of the column and progressively get "heavier" until the bottom component is left. Typically, the bottom is a tar substance.

For Diesel fuel, refiners adjust the variables of the fractionating columns to achieve the desired boiling range ("cutpoint") for the product being made. Diesel is "between" kerosene and a light lubricating oil and contains components of both. Kerosene will not gel as easily as the lubricating oils so your winter blend of Diesel is more kerosene and less of the lubricating oil which reduces the gelling point. The lubricating oils have more available "heat" (btu's) than the kerosene so fuel economy is theoretically better with summer blends than in the winter also. Oxygenates used to be added to gasoline but the EPA shut a lot of that down.

My "nutshell" primer on distillation of Diesel fuel!

I was told several years ago by the local fuel distributor that they mixed #2 diesel with #1 stove oil  50/50, then he said they came out with a new process that oxygenated the fuel somehow making it winter blend. In winter the price goes up, I guess that's why. The old winter fuel of 50/50 mix had less BTU's because #2 has more than #1, but #1 can withstand colder temps.  ThTS WHAT i WAS TOLD BY THE GUY. Dunno what they do now, but back in the 60's winter diesel was just diesel with up to 25% gasoline added. One outfit I worked for in the bush, kept a guy on night shift who just kept the machines warm in -30 weather..

Well, I'm guessing you'r not in LA. But I guess there are lots of "fringe" areas. I guess maybe if your not sure and going some wheres, where it's cold, then it would be best to put some winterizing stuff in the tank. One thing for sure, it needs to go in before the problem happens. Max

Why the white bottle? I live where it gets -20 and I dont need the white bottle. I use the silver bottle because it boosts cetane more. I think the white bottle has anti-jelling stuff in it. If you guys down there really need that, then we are all doomed anyway. If ya live where it gets cold, the diesel fuel at the pumps, in winter is "winterized diesel", up here it's usually formulated to -20 or there about. And you dont need winter diesel till it starts getting real cold. Max

If it takes three tries to start your old Mercedes Diesel , first , you're not following the proper cold start regimine ~ wait for the glow plug warning lamp to go out then hold the key & crank it until the engine not only starts but begins to accelerate and runs on all 5 cylinders , some engines want the pedal floored , others want partial throttle . experiment and -HOLD- the throttle still while you're cranking and after it starts until it fires on all 5 cylinders and speeds up .

Pumping the throttle never , _EVER_helps  it makes the engine harder to start .

Secondly : the battery is fine else it'd quit during the second try .

Don't forget to buy a bottle of Power Service Diesel Kleen in the WHITE bottle ~ white for Winter , Silver for Summer .

Add 3 ~ 5 Oz. to each full tank of fuel .

Look under the hood , there's a clear (maybe translucent if you have a bad Mechanic) plastic fuel screen typ filter between the steel fuel pipe and the engine ~ if it's black inside , go buy two new ones and replace one right now , this helps fuel flow and so cold starting and overall running performance . place the second primary filter in the glove box , you'll prolly need it before next March .

Now is also a good time to do or have done , a valve adjustment as tight valves (they're silent) cause hard starting .

well it only does it on the 3rd try when starting in the cold.  Maybe the battery is too low at this point. Also I don't have the proper battery with the proper cold cranking amps..
