If this is a manual trans, with a clutch, how does the engine rev without you suddenly accelerating?
If the car isn't accelerating, something is slipping. I would guess the clutch is on the way out.
As the clutch wears, you will see slipping in high gear first, mostly when you are accelerating, heading uphill, or into the wind. Once the clutch slips, it will never stop slipping until you remove the power (static friction/ dynamic friction coefficients).

Mechanic disconnected the power steering rod today to see if that will possibly solve the problem.
